Industry Outlook

According to the Healthcare Workforce Outlook, overall healthcare support occupations are expected to grow by about 28 percent, or about 1.1 million jobs, from 2014 to 2022, which is more than any other service occupation. In addition the organization predicts, “Personal care aides are projected to be the fastest growing healthcare occupation, increasing by 53 percent, followed closely by home health aides, increasing by 48 percent.”

The rise in demand for personal and home healthcare agencies is a result of the growing elderly population in our country. Home healthcare agencies are benefiting due to the rising cost of institutional care as well. Families of the elderly and disabled are seeking care for their loved ones in a more relaxed and friendly way, in the comfort of their own homes.

New Regulations in the Industry

When the Obama administration deemed that minimum wage and overtime pay requirements should extend to home health care workers, it caused a ripple effect throughout the industry. Many home care agencies across the country complained that if they had to adhere to the Labor Department’s general minimum wage and overtime pay requirements, it was going to require that they cut back on services to certain individuals or hire fewer caregivers. The department decided to delay the enforcement of this new rule until January 1, 2015. Several business groups were concerned that the new rule would have a detrimental effect on numerous agencies and would cause patients who required high levels of care to no longer receive the assistance that they required. They claimed that the extra 6 months of time would allow the home care agencies to find a way to become compliant with it.
